Governor's Home Town Award 2010
The Mt. Olive Schools Academic Foundation has been notified by Wendy Bell of the Governor's office that they are the winners of the Governor's Hometown Award in their category. The selection was made after the foundation appeared in front of a panel of judges at the Hilton Hotel in Springfield. The foundation was nominated by Supt. of Schools Patrick Murphy and was selected based on the application to go to the next step and that was to appear in front of the judges.
A short Power Point presentation was created by Kynli Smith and her father, Doug, who is the Grade school principal. Foundation President Roger Kratochvil made the presentation to the judges followed by Supt. Murphy presenting the Power Point. Kratochvil gave the foundation's side talking about the many alumni and businesses who support us. He mentioned a number of our alumni who have been very successful in life and have given back. Murphy gave the school's side talking about the very important role that the foundation serves to the kids. Five minutes to set up, fifteen minutes to make your presentation, five minutes for questions from the judges, and five minutes to leave was our schedule. They stayed on schedule.
There were many candidates for this honor and the Foundation finished first. Kratochvil said, "I would like to thank Mr. Murphy for nominating us, and Kynli and her father for providing the Power Point." He further stated, "I want to especially thank our great Mt. Olive school's alumi who continue to financially support our efforts to help the children. These alumni have always remembered where they came from and by their support, continue to give me and the rest of the board reason to continue on. Thank you."
On Tuesday, October 12th, President Kratochvil along with four representatives of the school district, city, and the foundation appeared at the Governor's Mansion in Springfield to receive the Governor's Award. Foundation President Roger and Treasurer Mary Kratochvil, Supt. of Schools Patrick Murphy, School Board President and Mayor John Skertich, and Herald staff member and Foundation member Carol Hamby attended. The Foundation recieved a trophy and a 4' x 3' highway sign to denote the honor.
Governor Pat Quinn presented the award to Foundation President Roger Kratochvil. This award has been presented continuously since 1983. It gives formal recognition to those who have answered the Constitution's call and contributed to their community's quality of life. Volunteers are making a difference in Illinois by creating a positive environment in which businesses and families want to live and work. Yet their efforts often go unheralded by their fellow citizens. According to the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, "when you reach into your pocket book to help guide youths you are making Illinois a better place for all of us."
